Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music did not just bring interest in reggaeton but also brought attention towards Latin music generally. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs predominantly in Spanish in 2016, compared to just two songs in 2015. However, during the heights of Despacito's fame in 2017 there were 19 predominantly Spanish songs that were included in the top 100. Then in 2020 it was 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017. In the year following, popular artists began working with reggaeton acts. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to create MIA (2018) and Madonna collaborated on Medellin together with Maluma (2019). As early as 2020, some reggaeton musicians protested that it was moving toward more mainstream. Rauw Alajandro is a part of a new generation looking to alter the course. Rauw Alejandro incorporated electronic dance forms and other genres into his songs.
